Hughes Shelters dispatched to Japan earthquake

Date: 14.03.2011

Hughes Shelter Systems received an urgent request for two Emergency Response Shelters on Friday evening at 8pm. These two units were delivered direct to Manchester’s International Search and Rescue (ISAR) team on Saturday morning and joined them on their flight to Japan.

The Japanese earthquake (the sixth largest on record) and tsunami has already claimed 1,593 lives and that figure is expected to reach at least 10,000. Monetary losses from the quake, tsunami and fires will total at least $100 billion, including $20 billion in damage to residences and $40 billion in damage to infrastructure such as roads, rail and port facilities.

This order highlights the versatility of the Hughes shelter range, especially when operating in extreme hostile environments. Supplying products to assist this rescue mission relies heavily on reliability and performance, a philosophy which Hughes adheres to.

In other news: seven shelters, with all the ancillary equipment are returning with the ISAR team from Christchurch, New Zealand; the location of a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on 22nd February, where more than 160 people died. The Red Cross and US search and rescue teams have shown great interest in the Hughes Emergency Response Shelter from seeing how effective it is in these situations.
